Inspired by recent adoptions of same-sex marriage, From Sodomy Laws to Same-Sex Marriage provides international perspectives on the legal and social history of same-sex relationships from the early 19th century to the present. Its emphasis is on areas where the impetus for change has been most noticeable Europe, the Americas, and Australasia.

From Sodom and Gomorrah to Britain's sodomy laws and continental Europe's abhorrence of sexual acts 'against nature', the history of same-sex love traditionally ranged from fire and brimstone maledictions to secrecy and scandal. Until recently, legal positions across the western world reflected the legacies of the British and French empires, as well as Christianity, particularly Catholicism. In recent years, however, there has been a revolution in attitudes towards same-sex relationships. This poses hitherto unanswered questions what historical complexities lie behind the revolutionary shift from punitive attitudes to legal endorsement of same-sex relationships? Given the cultural variety of historical attitudes to same-sex relationships, why has their legal acceptance been so international? The essays in this volume provide answers to these questions, offering the first international overview of the topic.

While other studies have attempted to explain the change in legal and social treatment of same-sex relationships in a national context, or within a shorter time frame, this is the first volume to examine the topic from the French Revolution to the present day, bringing together a diverse array of perspectives over a range of countries. It is an important volume for students and scholars of queer history, the history of sexuality, law and sociology.

C. S. Lewis was famous both as a fiction writer and as a Christian thinker, and scholars sometimes divide his personality in two. Yet a large part of Lewis's appeal, for both his audiences, lay in his ability to fuse imagination with instruction. "Let the pictures tell you their own moral," he once advised writers of children's stories. "But if they don't show you any moral, don't put one in."

The Artist Way 25th Anniversary Edition Julia Cameron 9780143129257 Books Reviews

  • Published in 2002, it is alsoa workbook where you go through the different exercises over a period of 12 weeks or three months. I did all the exercises, including the morning pages. It shifted me as a person as well as helped me acknowledge the creative side of who I am. It’s really freed out some of my inner wounds and also helped me to feel much more liberated and be more creative in my personal and professional life.

I recommend this book to all people, even those who don’t think that they’re creative because really, when we allow our inner child to come out and play, we have much more joy in our lives and this will allow us to be creative in other areas in our personal and professional life.

Whatever job that you are in, you may think it does not involve creativity. You’ll be wrong. There are elements of creativity in everything that we do. Be a fuller person so that you are just much more integrated with all that you are so that you reach your fullest potential.
  • The edition is an excellent choice for using the Artists's Way workbook. Previously I had bought the print spiral bound edition, hoping to use it but I never did, because I did not want to fill in the pages of the print book, so as to save the print book for re-use or to sell later. However, in the edition, I am able to go on to my PC and copy and paste the assignments and tasks into my own Word documents, making my own book in effect to use and re-use and type in the assignments in the actual pages. To me it is well worth the extra cost to have the edition workbook to avoid typing in the assignments..
  • I loved it! I decided to actually follow the guidelines for the book - one chapter a week, doing the written exercises, the morning pages, the artist day..and I stuck to it. That is not usual for me, but I decided to give it a try..and it worked! I still do not go to my studio as often as I should and I am still not as disciplined as I should be..but it doesn't bother me as much and I keep to the thought that this should be fun...and I have more fun! The side effect that I had completely not anticipated at all, was that I lost 25 pounds over the 16 weeks (16 chapters) and I wasn't even trying. Doing the written exercises, thinking through the material, remembering things, and writing morning pages, reduced anxiety and stress and I guess I just ate less. That made me feel good, and good feelings kept building, so, I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to try a 16week course to reexamine your life journey and pursue a more creative life ahead. I have now bought this book for so many friends..but it really doesn't do the magic unless you put the time into it. So, if you buy it, agree to all the exercises, or it is just another self-help book that will not sink in. Good luck!
  • This book is very engaging with a variety of activities. However I also purchased the 25th anniversary Edition and there is too much redundancy to warrant purchasing both.
  • This is a journey. A journey of a lifetime. If you are so fortunate to open this book and workbook; your life could not ever be the same . The book took away the pain of no decisions, bad decisions and decisions made for me. I did and you may discover the creative person you are and were meant to be. Nothing is the same, for me I have broken chains that bound me to labor. I have re constructed who I am. Please get these 2 items and join me in a life worth living that can never be stolen or lost again.
  • I bought this as a gift and haven't heard how she liked it. I loved it, as did my niece when i gave it to her a few years ago. However, although I expected the anniversary edition to be especially nice it actually wasn't as nice as the original and I regretted choosing it.
  • Some people may not like this workbook because it's lined pages with quotes. That's it. But, for me, it's very helpful as a way to get me to actually do it. There are exactly 3 pages for each day of the 12 week program. If you don't fill the 3-pages, then you're behind. For me, this is helpful in motivating me to get up early and fill in the 3 pages. Plus, the quotes make writing more meaningful.
  • Even though it’s a bit too spiritual for me, honestly I almost quit on the book after reading the intro. and I was really rather skeptical about how this book would help me. It sounded a bit corny like self help book for artist. Like chicken soap for the artist soul.

But getting past that and actually getting into doing the assignments and homework the book ask that you do week after week. I found the book was really helpful. I guess its like anything else where you get what you put in out of it and it’s different for everyone.

I read somewhere that this book might have come out too soon for its own good. I think that if had added what we know today about neurology and how the brain works, instead of the spiritual stuff it would have been better off.

I have recommended this book to others (artist friends) and have had moments where I felt I needed to reread a curtain part or do a curtain writing task again. Underneath the things that turned me off, there really are some priceless gems within the pages. And if you make it too the end of the 12 weeks you’ll be glad you did.

But depending on who you are and how many issues you might have (rough childhood, stuff thats happen to you in the past) I recommend this book with a bit a caution. This book causes you to face a lot of things. So just be ready for that.

We cannot give what we do not have. So, if we do not love ourselves, or even if we are too obsessed with ourselves, how then can we love others?

What Makes Us Girls examines the topic of self-worth through a modern cultural lens. Using examples from the author's life experience and the life experiences of a variety of other girls, What Makes Us Girls analyzes seven of the most common issues that result in a destructive sense of self-worth comparison, rejection, bullying, inauthenticity, purposelessness, betrayal, and guilt.

Every girl in the world, no matter our age or the country we are from, will have to face a battle for self-worth. Some of us will win, and some of us will lose. But those of us who win will do so for two reasons We are able to see the battle for what it is and, even more importantly, we have the right weapons to fight it.

"I downloaded this and read it in one day. Quite unintentionally! I found myself picking it up again and again throughout the day when I had a moment. While probably older than the intended demographic, I enjoyed it thoroughly, relating to a lot of Brittany's anecdotes, and also encountering the surprising truth that others have found true female friendships difficult to obtain. This book is wholly sincere and gives great, practical advice which should help any young woman navigate her way through school, college, and beyond. This being said, I will be buying it for my nieces, when old enough. Who knows? Perhaps What Makes Us Girls will become the female handbook equivalent to Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life. In short, even if you're in your 30s like me, I suggest giving it a whirl."

What Makes Us Girls And Why It All Worth It Audible Audio Edition Brittany Pettibone Nicole Pettibone Reason Books Books Reviews

  • This is a book of advice to women from a self proclaimed alt right YouTube blogger. One of the greatest surprises is that it is basically common sense. It is not political at all, unless it is now political to say that a young woman should take her time and get to know the guy, and not waste her time in relationships that are destined not to be permanent.

It is sad to me that Pettibone must recognize the hookup culture as a fact of life. One of the most real pieces of dialogue in the book concerns a conversation in which two of the more popular girls make fun of her for being such a prude. Their message is that life is about fun, sex is fun, so you should do it. Don't worry.

Unfortunately, the hookup culture is so pervasive, so taken for granted, that a young man or woman who is sincerely looking for marriage cannot afford to say so. They have to play the game as if they were just in it for fun in order not to scare off potential mates.

Pettibone states the obvious in saying that if this is our outlook, our society is headed for collapse. We need solid relationships in children to perpetuate ourselves. Equally important, appoints and makes repeatedly in the book, is that our lives will be more fulfilling if they are built on stable long-lasting relationships.

A bit of criticism. The first thing that struck me as a middle school teacher is that the vocabulary is somewhat advanced. I put it through an online readability checker where it came out as somewhere between average and hard-to-read. If the target audience is teenage girls, it ought to be easier.

This is a problem I find in general within the alt right. Their use of erudition to fight the criticism that they are knuckle dragging primitives is self-defeating. If one wants to connect with an audience it is necessary to talk at their level. Be
    • Succinct,
    • Easy to understand
    • Visually appealing

Pettibone is natural and skillful with the YouTube medium. I would suggest that she publish a series of short YouTube segments, 7 to 10 minutes perhaps, using a simple vocabulary to talk directly to her teenage audience. The topics could come right out of the book bullying, betrayal, being fake, finding a purpose and so on. She does a good job on each of these. They are not political topics.

What is called a right-wing agenda is really no more than a belief in tradition. A society can only perpetuate itself if men and women get together to form families and raise children. This book is mostly just advice on how to manage your own life such that you can do that. Look around will show that the people who for the last two generations have not adhered to tradition are dying out. They don't have nearly enough children and grandchildren to replace themselves. Those they have accept as normal all sorts of lifestyles that are inconsistent with perpetuating our culture.

I am encouraged that Pettibone and a few other YouTube bloggers such as Blonde are getting married and express the intention of having children. I hope we don't lose track of them once they get bogged down with family.

This is certainly the kind of advice that I will give to my 1-year-old daughter. The greatest blessing in my life is to now have a wife who sees things the same way Pettibone and I do. It is especially poignant for me – my two millennial daughters are unhappy, unsuccessful, and strenuously unwilling to recognize that the cultural Marxist values in which they were steeped for all their childhood are a large part of what makes them so.
  • I plan to order additional copies for my niece and for my friend with daughters.

This is a straight forward read that is down to earth and approachable in the use of real life anecdotes to illustrate some quite deep concepts. I found myself mentally shouting "Yes!" at some statements that revealed truths that took me decades to learn and about which whole books have been written. ( Love vs respect in male/female relationships.)

While I can't say that it carries the weight and impact of Jordan Peterson's "12 Rules for Life", it is a complementary work, and I found it thought provoking and helpful. It is certainly approachable for teens and lends itself well to helping us each realize that we are not alone in our fears and struggles. It provides a sense of hope and is itself clear evidence that we can weather storms and find our way to sunnier days.

In this time of outrage mobs and internet hate/bullying, applying the lessons contained here can produce a calmer, more well-grounded and satisfying life in the real world. Isn't that what we want for our children? And if you want that for your children, shouldn't you want that for yourself as well?

While there were a few abrupt transitions from one paragraph to another, the thread of each chapter illustrates the concept of that chapter into a cohesive view.

    Highly recommended.

  • I couldn't get past thinking about Alanis Morisette back when her big hit "You Outta Know" or whatever the title was, came out when she was 21. Everyone asked " How can 21 year old know the answer to questions that come from a lifetime's worth of experience?" I couldn't get past this while reading the book. Perhaps because I am in midlife and have experienced the many ups and downs that come with marriage, child rearing and a professional career of over 25 years, but I cannot take advice from someone who has not experienced these things, yet proclaims to know about it all. I realize it is written for the young adult in mind, but we shouldn't give them advice that is not for anyone else.
